First Steps for Our Young Missouri Fox Trotter Fillies – King’s Prima Donna M.R. & Arizona Outlaw’s Chiquita M.R.
At Miller-Ranch in Arizona, the training of young Missouri Fox Trotter horses begins with patience, sensitivity, and deep respect for each horse’s individual development pace. Two of our most promising young fillies – King’s Prima Donna M.R. and Arizona Outlaw’s Chiquita M.R. – recently had their very first experiences under saddle. Both Missouri Fox Trotter fillies are two years old and come from proven, highly regarded bloodlines. These first sessions mark the beginning of their journey toward becoming dependable riding and trail horses – with trust, calmness, and confidence at the core.
King’s Prima Donna M.R. – Calm, Balanced, and In Tune
King’s Prima Donna M.R., a refined and well-built Missouri Fox Trotter filly, is sired by Nabucco’s King Of The Road M.R. and out of Arizona Outlaw’s Antonia M.R.. From the beginning, she has shown herself to be calm, attentive, and willing to learn. In her very first round pen session with Kate, she was gently introduced to the saddle and a rider – entirely at her own rhythm, without pressure, and with frequent breaks and praise.
In the short video clip we shared, you can clearly see how confidently and smoothly Prima Donna moves. Her gaits – typical for a well-bred Missouri Fox Trotter – are soft, fluid, and natural. Even under saddle, she already demonstrates a balanced posture and good body control. These qualities are clear indicators of her potential as a future trail and leisure horse.
Time to Grow – Back to Open Turnout
After two or three more light training sessions of 10–15 minutes each, King’s Prima Donna M.R. will be given a well-earned break. As with all young Missouri Fox Trotter horses at Miller-Ranch, we take great care not to overburden their young bodies or minds. She will spend the coming months out in open turnout with her group – where she can move freely, develop her social behavior, and grow strong and healthy. Her formal training will resume next year, once she is physically and mentally ready to continue.
Coming Soon: Full “First Step” Session Video
For all who are interested in the gentle, progressive training of Missouri Fox Trotter horses, we will soon publish the full video of Prima Donna’s first round pen session. The 20-minute video documents every stage of this important milestone – from her first steps with tack to her calm walk under a rider. Transparency and horsemanship go hand in hand at Miller-Ranch, and we’re excited to share this with the broader Missouri Fox Trotter community.
Arizona Outlaw’s Chiquita M.R. – Alert, Smart, and Full of Promise
Arizona Outlaw’s Chiquita M.R., another talented two-year-old Missouri Fox Trotter, also had her big moment this week. She is sired by Arizona Outlaw M.R. and out of Estrella M.R., two bloodlines known for their strength, intelligence, and natural gait. Tyler guided her through her first round pen experience under saddle.
Even in her first moments with a rider, Chiquita showed great willingness and curiosity. One highlight of her session was her fast understanding of the important cue: “hand on the neck = stop.” This cue is part of our core training language and is an essential building block for developing light and clear communication between rider and horse – especially useful on the trail or in difficult terrain.
The Miller-Ranch Philosophy – Quality Takes Time
At Miller-Ranch, we follow a clear and proven principle: A great Missouri Fox Trotter is built with time, trust, and a training approach based on respect. The first steps under saddle are just a small, but critical milestone on the journey to becoming a reliable partner – whether for trail, show, or ranch work. Our trainers – like Kate and Tyler – bring years of experience and an intuitive understanding of how to nurture each Missouri Fox Trotter horse’s potential.
Both Prima Donna and Chiquita are outstanding examples of the quality this breed has to offer. The Missouri Fox Trotter is celebrated for its natural gaits, calm temperament, and strong bond with people. At Miller-Ranch, we are committed to bringing out the very best in each horse through a kind and thorough training process.
Looking Ahead – A Bright Future for These Young Missouri Fox Trotter Fillies
After their break in turnout, both King’s Prima Donna M.R. and Arizona Outlaw’s Chiquita M.R. will return to training next year. At that time, we’ll focus on groundwork, desensitization, leading, and the further development of their natural gaits. As future trail horses, they will be taught to move calmly and securely through various types of terrain – embodying the true versatility of the Missouri Fox Trotter breed.
We are excited to see how these two special fillies continue to grow – and we invite all friends, enthusiasts, and breeders of the Missouri Fox Trotter to follow their journey here at Miller-Ranch.
Stay tuned – we’ll be sharing updates, photos, and videos regularly on our website and social media channels. Missouri Fox Trotter training, transparent and authentic – that’s what Miller-Ranch is all about
